The client
Hans Turck GmbH & Co. KG was founded in the mid sixties in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Today the company belongs to the leading company groups in the sector of industrial automation worldwide. In the past 40 years, the company, within the meaning of consequent customer orientation, has been determined to develop from a component manufacturer to an internationally established provider of complete system solutions. With a variety of circa 13,000 products in the areas of sensor, interface, and field bus technology, Turck has an effective and efficient product solution for almost any application. Apart from that, the company develops made to measure solutions for customer specific requirements, thereby strengthening its position as a valuable partner of the industry in all aspects of industrial automation.
The task
For many years already, TURCK has been administering their extensive, technical product spectrum with ASIM® of DHW information management, which enables generating print documents. The task for communicode was to make the product spectrum of the Mülheim company available to national and international customers both online and on CD-ROM. Apart from that, Internet users were to be provided with additional functionalities, thereby increasing their loyalty to the company.
The implementation
Via a standard XML interface, the product information, which is already structured and organised for the print process, will be directly imported from ASIM® into the online catalogue of the Product Information Management Systems (PIM). Optimal additional information in form of PDF files or technical drawings can be called directly for each product group or product. The customers of TURCK now have far-reaching possibilities to start and process enquires via the company’s website. An optional personalisation module makes a number of user-specific functionalities, such as storing bookmarks and memory lists, available. Via a subordinate generating process, the entire online catalogue will be made available on CD-ROM. The CD catalogue can be started without any further installation directly from the CD-ROM. It is served by the internet browser and is both optically and functionally identical with the online catalogue.
The details
The layout of the company website was adapted by communicode and integrated into the web catalogue. The technological basis is formed by a database supported J2EE system with the Product Information Management System (PIM) as its core piece. Thanks to a MVC2 framework, application logic (Java) and presentation level (HTML) can be separated without any problems.
The application
Already as from 2003, TURCK has been concentrating on the features of PowerSearch. Since the beginning of April 2006, TURCK’s clients are able to specify their application profiles in addition to product characteristics. As soon as a client activates PowerSearch, a clear entry form appears next to the list of product characteristics, containing amongst others the application parameters, which are specific for the product sector. When the client has entered all data, the special search function will find the matching product. The parameters, entered by the client, appear as a clear slide control within the graphic application.
A particular highlight of the graphical application search (PowerFlash) is its integration into the existing PIM-System ASIM®. That way TURCK is able to maintain all product information which is required for the application directly in ASIM®. All data is made available in a standardized form in the web application and the graphical simulation. The simulation realized with Flash communicates directly with the online catalogue. That way both applications are always up to date and contain identical product information.
